Kostas Tourlas
Position: Senior Consultant
Education and Qualifications
Kostas Tourlas holds M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer
Science from the University of Edinburgh. He joined Adelard
in 2003 and has since been working in the areas of software
dependability, safety assessment, and safety case
development.
Safety assessment and consultancy
- (Prersent) Leading Adelard's ISA team for the T102
miltary radars, which are soon to replace the legacy T93
designs.
- (2007) Produced an assessment for British Energy of a
PC-based system for data recording. The system is now in
operation at Heynsham.
- (2006−2007) Produced an evaluation for CINIF (the UK's
nuclear forum) of the EMPHASIS process audit tool, based on
its practical application to a commercial smart sensor
product.
- (2006−2007) Project leader on the development of guidance
for the safety assessment of PCs in nuclear applications
(the "Low SIL" project, commissioned by British Energy).
- (2006) Produced an assessment for British Energy of the OS9
operating system, in the context of its use in a valve
control system at Sizewell.
- (2004) Co-author of the safety case for ADSI (Advance
Defence Systems Integrator), which provides a data
forwarding service to TACC (Tactical Air Command & Control
system).
- (2004) Author of safety cases for a variety of radios and
headset equipment used in RAF airfields.
- (2003−present) Member of Adelard's ISA team for Bowman, the
MoD's battlefield digitisation project.
- (2003−2004) Member of Adelard's ISA team for the UK Air
Defence Maintenance Capability Programme, the UK's military
air traffic control system.
- (2003−2005) Reasearch on the reliability, availability and
safety aspects of general-purpose operating systems,
including Windows 2000, XP and Linux. Undertaken for various
clients, including the MoD and Electa Oncology Systems.
- (2003−2004) Member of Adelard's team for FEAST (Further
Experience with Advanced Static Analysis), a series projects
on the safety justification of smart sensor devices.
- (2003) Member of Adelard's team for SPASC, a European
project to update the European Space Agency policy and
guidelines for software development.
- (1998) Member of a six-strong team consulted by Lucas
Aerospace on best practices in the development of real-time
control software.
